Description
This documentation of the Sheep Creek Bridge in Archuleta County was produced by Fraserdesign of Loveland Colorado, under contract with the U.S. Forest Service, San Juan National Forest. The bridge has in recent years experienced partial collapse of one of its timber towers, which has caused one of the main cables to sag and the deck to tilt precipitously to one side. Although closed to pedestrian traffic as a result, the bridge is presently still being used by hikers seeking access to the Piedra River on the Sheep Creek Trail. To alleviate the danger caused by this, the National Forest has proposed replacement of the structure in 2007. This documentation is intended to mitigate the impact on the National Register-eligible bridge by this action. Photographic and dimensional recordation of the bridge was undertaken in August 2006 by Clayton Fraser, Principla of Fraserdesign, and Emilie Ryan, Research Historian, with the assistance of Pagosa Ranger District Archeologist Gary Fairchild of the U.S. Forest Service.
